Cal AI
Point a phone at a plate and it counts the calories. Two teenagers built it.

Not a weekend build — the first version took months, leaning almost entirely on existing AI models rather than on the founders writing a backend. · source
What it is
Cal AI is a calorie tracker that works from a photograph. You take a picture of a meal and it estimates the calories and macros, which removes the part of food logging everybody quits over — typing in every ingredient.
It was built by two high-school students and reached over 15 million downloads and more than $30 million in annual revenue in under two years, on a team of seven. In March 2026 it was acquired by MyFitnessPal, the incumbent it had been taking share from.
The monthly numbers are the more useful ones, and they are unusually well documented: $28,000 in month one, $115,000 in month two, $1M in monthly recurring revenue by month six, a plateau around $2M a month, and $5.7M a month by January 2026. The headline figure below is the annual one because that is what TechCrunch reported at the acquisition; the month-by-month trail is in the timeline, sourced separately.

Founders
How it broke out
Cal AI did not break out on one post. It climbed the App Store health charts steadily enough that MyFitnessPal noticed it on Sensor Tower and started watching — which is how the acquisition began.
The founders' own visibility came separately: Zach Yadegari's post about being rejected by most of the colleges he applied to, while running an app doing millions in revenue, went viral on X and put the story in front of everyone who had not heard of the app.
