Claude Chat vs Cowork vs Code vs Design
Learn when to use Claude Chat, Cowork, Claude Code and Claude Design for research, writing, coding, business workflows and creative work.

In Claude Chat vs Cowork vs Code vs Design, use Claude chat for quick back-and-forth questions and drafts, Cowork to hand off multi-step work that ends in a finished file, Claude Code to build and change real software, and Claude Design to make visual work like prototypes, slides and one-pagers.
"Should I use Chat or Cowork for this?" is the most common question once a team starts using Claude across departments. The answer depends on the shape of the task, not the department. This guide explains what each of the four Claude products is, who it's for and which plan you need, then maps 50+ real use cases across Marketing, Product, Engineering, Sales, HR, Legal and more to the right tool.
What Each Claude Product Is
Claude chat (claude.ai) — turn-by-turn work
Chat is the conversation you already know: you ask, Claude answers, you steer, it revises. Use it when the answer shapes your next question, when you want to stay involved, or when the task is quick. It runs on the web at claude.ai, in the desktop app and on mobile, and it's on every plan including Free. Chat can search the web, remember past conversations, use connectors, run Research, and render diagrams, charts and documents as Artifacts right in the conversation.
Claude Cowork — handing off tasks
Cowork is where you hand Claude a job instead of a question. It suits a multi-step task that ends in a finished deliverable, spans your tools, or runs on a schedule. Claude shows its plan, works through the steps across the files, folders, connectors and browser you give it, and hands back real output such as a spreadsheet with formulas, a presentation, or an organised folder. Cowork uses the same agentic architecture as Claude Code, with no terminal. It asks permission before deleting files.
Cowork is for paid plans (Pro, Max, Team, Enterprise). The full experience is in the Claude desktop app on macOS and Windows (Linux in beta), where Claude can use your local files and browser. Cowork on web and mobile is in beta, and it's also in the Claude in Chrome side panel.
Chat and Cowork are merging. Anthropic is gradually rolling out a single Claude experience, starting with Pro and Max plans, where you no longer pick "Chat" or "Cowork" first. You describe what you need and Claude decides whether to answer or take on the task. The difference between the two kinds of work below still applies.
Claude Code — building software
Claude Code is Anthropic's agentic coding tool. It works directly in your codebase: it reads what's there, edits files across the project, runs commands, and works with Git to create commits, branches and pull requests. It runs in the terminal, in VS Code and JetBrains IDEs, in the Code tab of the Claude desktop app, on the web at claude.ai/code, and from the Claude mobile app. You can also mention @Claude in Slack with a bug report and get a pull request back.
Claude Code needs a paid plan (Pro and above) or an Anthropic Console account. It's the right tool for developers, and for anyone whose output has to be real, running code.
Claude Design — visual work
Claude Design, launched by Anthropic Labs in April 2026, lets you create designs, interactive prototypes, slides, one-pagers and marketing assets through conversation. You describe what you need, Claude builds a first version on a canvas, and you refine it through chat, inline comments, direct edits, or sliders Claude makes for you. It can use screenshots, design files, codebases and your team's design system as input, and it can add animation to slides and prototypes.
You can open it at claude.ai/design, from a chat, or with the /design command in Claude Code. Export to PDF, PPTX, standalone HTML or Canva, send to connected tools, or hand the design to Claude Code to build. Claude Design is included with Pro, Max, Team and Enterprise plans and uses your plan's usage limits. On Enterprise, an admin has to turn it on.

Recurring Work: Scheduled Tasks, Routines and /loop
All three recurring options run a task for you on a schedule, but they run in different places.

FAQ
What's the difference between Claude chat and Cowork?
Chat is a back-and-forth conversation where you steer each turn, best for drafting and quick questions. Cowork takes a whole task, plans the steps, works across your files and tools, and hands back a finished deliverable. Anthropic is now merging the two into one experience on Pro and Max, where Claude picks the approach for you.
When should I use Claude Code instead of Cowork?
Use Claude Code when the output must be working code, such as a bug fix, a script or a deployed website, or when the task depends on a codebase, like reviewing a pull request. Use Cowork when the output is a document, spreadsheet, deck or report built from files and connected apps.
What is Claude Design used for?
Claude Design is for visual work: interactive prototypes, slides, one-pagers, mockups and marketing assets. You describe what you need, refine it on a canvas, then export to PDF, PPTX, HTML or Canva, or hand it off to Claude Code to build.
Which Claude plan do I need for Cowork, Claude Code and Claude Design?
Chat is available on the Free plan. Cowork, Claude Code and Claude Design all need a paid plan: Pro, Max, Team or Enterprise. On Enterprise, admins may need to turn some of them on first.
Do Claude scheduled tasks need my laptop to be on?
Not always. Cowork scheduled tasks and Claude Code Routines run remotely, so they keep running when your computer is asleep. Tasks that need a folder on your computer, Claude Code desktop scheduled tasks, and /loop run on your machine.
